I have found that to be the case in Q-H brand parts but not so much in OEM or TRW ball joints.
Your trick about the twisting of the boot is new to me but makes sense.
A little grease there wouldn't hurt either. And if the car is parked for a long time,
it might be good to slide something in there to unstick them before doing any steering.
