Mine knocked a bit with regular gasoline and poor tuning. I went to 89 octane and the pinging went away.
Because the rings wear after 100k miles, it would be best to get a compression test. Anything over 180 and you start looking for higher octane. But, these engines will let you know, before there is any damage, if you need higher grade gasoline.
Look in the spark plug holes and see if there are piles of carbon. This could also creat hot spots resulting in premature burning. Seafoam or water slowly sucked into the manifold will clean out the carbon deposits.
