If its the M47 trani, the switch is on the drivers side.
The small wire harness for the backup lights has the bad insulation on it, I will bet that the wires are shorted together inside the sleeving due to the insulation crumbling.
This harness plugs into the trani on the drivers side then runs to clip on the passenger side then up the shifter hole , under the carpet to a two pin connector at the Center console just behind the drivers side kick panel.
you could get your hand up there and disconnect the wires and see if the backup lights stay on, if the do, the wires are probably shorted in the sleeving.
