...I chucked the EZOut set and rely on heat and chemicals instead.
Having broken my share of extractors, I still have use for them. The example that comes to mind is the security screws holding the steering column to the dash.
The rule of experience is telling me:
(1) An EZ-out and its drill need to be sized properly for the job. Too large, and it expands the work tighter into the threads. Too small, and it can't deliver the torque. I should try to find a chart.
(2) Success or failure seems to depend on what made the fastener break. If I've just turned it in its threads, as in breaking on installation, the extractor will do it. If it broke attempting to turn in on removal, using the EZ-out will fail every time. Because I don't break too many fasteners on installation, the EZ-outs rarely get used.
They are usually more trouble than they are worth.
I've never successfully removed a broken caliper bleed screw. I've purchased some reman calipers that looked as if someone else tried; threads so sloppy I'm afraid to tighten it. Caliper core karma.
