How much smaller? 5/16 to 1/4"?

On a carb'd engine the flow is supplied at low operating pressures, and the size is critical to deliver the proper flow, unlike FI systems that provide more than adequate flow at much higher line pressures.

You may run out of fuel at very high rpms
