scroll down to the bottom of http://www.brickboard.com/FAQ/700-900/EngineOBDCodes.htm and it explains how to retrieve the rudimentary fault codes from earlier ignition systems.

I don't see anything in the faq or Bentley for the pre LH 2.4 injection systems, so they may not have any. Never having had one of those cars, I have no first-hand experience.
