Overdrive problems 700

I have a 1988 volvo 740 turbo wagon with manual 4 speed transmission with the electric overdrive. My problem is sometimes the car will come in and out of overdrive. The green 5 light in the dash stays on and the car will: either stay in overdrive, go in and out of overdrive, or just stay in 4th gear. My problem may be that I dont have the overdrive button (I just touch the 2 wires together to engage the overdrive), but I have seen alot of talk about the overdrive. Thanks in advance for any info. Also does anyone know if the overdrive button keeps the 2 wires connected or does it make the 2 contact and then seperate until the button is pushed again.
