I never know where to post questions about my car as it has more in common with a V90 than it does a 940....

Anyway, my '97 960 is having some a/c issue that I would like to get some help with. From start up, I can drive the car about 10 minutes before the a/c cuts out. The compressor disengages and I have no a/c at this point. If I cut the car off and wait about 10 minutes or so, the a/c will then work, only to repeat the process once I start driving.

One interesting thing is that I'm dealing with some low-vacuum issues inside the dash. When I accelerate and the engine vacuum decreases, the air to the vents cuts out and when I'm not pressing the accelerator and engine vacuum increases, the air starts to come out the vents as it should. I've already re-soldered the vacuum distributor and have put another control unit in it and have more vacuum leaks to chase down under the dash. When there is the proper vacuum, the air-handling system is OK.

I'm mentioning the vent cut out because often when the a/c stops working is when I'm under a low-vacuum situation (accelerating, etc.) and then it stays off until I wait about 10 minutes. The other day, I let the car idle for about 20 minutes and the a/c stayed on the whole time, so I find it sort of odd that the problem arises mostly when I'm accelerating.

I put a manifold set on the car and the low side read about 29 psi at 84 ambient with a vent reading of 44 degrees. No high side port on this car.

From reading about a/c problems in these cars, I checked out the high-temp sensor on the compressor and it has already been bypassed.

I'm wondering if I may be slightly low on R134a, but I don't have a refrigerant machine and am hoping to fix this problem myself.

I really wish they would have used a simpler system as they did in my 240's.
