"And one more thing -- if (as you wrote) you've found that the master cylinder goes to the floor, it's probably already "cooked."

I'm aware of the "don't push to the floor" rule, so we didn't. We just couldn't build up any pedal. So, it just may be a defective master cylinder. I'm going to see if the parts house will warranty it and then try again ...... later, when it's not 95 degrees outside.
