On my 1996 960 the alternator pulley seems to not line up with the ps pulley above it or the AC compressor pulley below it. I have replaced the ps pump and the AC compressor and not touched the alternator. The ps pump pulley can be moved by millimeters fore and aft but the compressor cannot. The problem is that the serpentine belt always goes forward and off the 'track' that it should be following on the AC compressor. Right now it is not that big a deal because the AC is not working but when it does I do not think it will be very good for the belt to be about two lines forward of where it should be and hanging off the front of the pulley. When I eye the three pulleys up it is clearly the alt pulley that is too far forward and causing the AC pulley not to be correctly engaged. I cannot see any way to move the alternator pulley backward (towards the windshield).
Has anyone ever seen this?
Can anyone think of a cure?
Thanks very much,
Jim Lee
