At least, I think I found the cause.
Blow by had been getting worse. Also, a tapping sound had appeared.
Popping the valve cover off, I found a broken valve spring. The spring had broken into 3 pieces.
Upon further inspection, I found out that one of the lifters has collapsed on a different valve.
All this would seem to explain why the car hasn't been running well as of late.
Word of warning to everyone here: DO NOT USE SCANTECH LIFTERS! These lifters only have around 10K miles on them, and all of them are in need of replacement.
When I was putting the engine together, I couldn't find any other lifters, so I bought new Scantech ones.
Today I'm hoping to get everything back together with new ipd style lifters and pushrods. The broken valve spring has already been replaced. Visual inspection of the cam through the lifter holes leads me to believe that it is okay (and I really don't feel much like pulling the cam out.)
Shame on you Scamtech!!
