The wire for the speedometer comes from the rear differential. Look at the wiring in that area for worn or bare places. You might be able to repair it.

If you find you need to replace the entire length of wire, you can find a donor car and take the wire and connector from the level sensor on the top of the brake fluid reservoir. The connector is an exact match.
