Sending units in my 444 project car and 544 parts car were both junk. A few years before restoring the 444, I had built an airplane which used sending units much like the one I found in the old Volvos.
For the restoration I ordered one of those and used it. It took a little bit of bending of the float arm but it works fine. Just from memory, I think it is a standard automotive unit - at the time it was Stewart Warner. The flange is the same as the one on the Volvo tank.
If you want to give that a try, here is the place I bought mine (and the airplane project years ago).

If that URL does not work you can just search for fuel sending unit in the Vans Aircraft web site. They are $27 plus a dollar or so for the gasket. Probably also available from auto parts stores.
An alternative if you don't mind some fiddling to make it work.
