Don't beat yourself you too badly. Although us Volvo owners tend to feel we're a cut above the rest I'm sure there are some that don't take the time to closely go over the owners manuals unless the need arises. After all most folks probably have more exciting things to read about unless that sort of stuff floats your boat so to speak. Personally I feel the light switch shut off feature is a clever idea and usually something absent in newer cars designed for no operator maintenance.
