Rustproofing 101 200

Hi Paul,

In that before and after series, what you see is a new filter. All of the other parts are same as before, but cleaned up. The tray itself was not badly rusted, but the clamps were, so they got wire brushed, washed, treated with phosphoric acid, and painted with POR-15. Those are the steps POR-15 recommends.

The tray probably got a coat of cold zinc spray, after getting a bath, if I did it by habit. I think the old fish-oil based Rustoleum primer was effective, too, but I've been using that Zinc-It (CRC product in the electrical section of your home center store) for the past few years.

If you spray undercoating over rust, it will just flake off and possibly make things rust even faster by trapping the moisture next to the steel.

The tape around the fuel pump was to replace the original tape after cleaning it well. I'm not exactly sure why the manufacturer put it there, under the clamp. Perhaps because the clamp and the pump body are made from different metals. Just a guess.
