I just finished up installed a refreshed 68-style non-impale-your-chest steering box and all new steering linkages.
The steering setup I removed from the car still felt pretty good and tight, minus the shot tie rods all over the place. The box didn't have much slop in it and spun nicely. I was planning on cleaning it up and offering it up for sale, or maybe keeping it as a spare.
In any case, I opened it up this afternoon and found some surprising damage inside. The shaft gear (the worm gear portion connected to the steering shaft) has a large chunk missing from the shoulder of it. It looks like whatever chunks broke off scored up the inside of the box as well.

So, any sense putting it back together? I don't think that the damage is in an area that contacts the bearings or mating gear, but wonder about the longevity if it's already had pieces fracture off.
