the new regulator has no markings on the posts...

Sounds like You just bought cheap Chinese junk for a quality price. The terminals should be in the same place as the old one with the D & DF terminals forming a T pattern.

Can I ask why would you buy an adjustable one? The original ones were adjustable, but then they invented a solid state regulator which stays at the correct voltage without ever needing a tweak.
