I disconnected the temperature sensor to check the contacts and noticed the sensor had a green body. I knew the one I had checked in the hot water was a black body.
The head is off of a B230FT; I just went with the sensor that was in it- green body; Bosch 747. The black body was Bosch 167.
I installed the original 167 and was able to clear the 1-2-3 code. The check engine light is off.
I do not have the time to run a temperature test on the 747. I am guessing the sensor is bad rather than just the wrong application. I can't imagine they are that different.
I had just done a head gasket on this car and was not anxious to remove the intake again. I disconnected the intake hose at the throttle body and the throttle body electrical connector. I was able to reach in under the throttle body and get my hand on the temperature sensor lead to disconnect it.
A deep well 19mm socket was place over the sensor along the same route. I was able to put together extensions and a universal that attached to the socket. A rachet loosened the sensor and I was able to spin it out with the extensions.
Installing the replacement was more of the same moves. I used a (very)little bit of gasket sealer on the copper washer to keep it in place. I learned that by having it fall off on the first attempt....
