testing the charging system 200 1988

Last week after filling up with fuel my 240 didn't start right up -- I got a few turns of the starter motor each time I turned the key, then just a click. I popped the hood and shook the battery terminals, then it started the next time. No problems at the weekend, but today when I started it the starter motor turned over slower than usual. I turned it off and started it again, but it wouldn't turn over fast enough to start the car. The battery was at about 10.5 volts. I charged up the battery, and got 12.75 volts across the terminals, but it dropped to 12.5 after starting the engine, then 11.8 with no increase with increased revs. To check for bad connections I checked between the +bat on the alternator and the positive terminal on the battery (0.6v), then between the alternator body and the negative battery terminal (0.2v). I don't see any obviously loose wires or ground straps. Are there other tests I should perform bfore I conclude that the alternator has given up? I assume it was just luck that I got it running at the filling station by jiggling the battery connections. Sorry for the long post.
