My indication that the battery was failing was the need to get much closer to the car before it would respond to the remote. A fresh battery brought back the full 30-40ft range. I think the keyless receiver/relay is under the centre console. You could hold your transmitter close to there and see if it works.

IIRC, the batteries are not one of the more common types, and were relatively costly. Fortunately they last a long time.
