SU insulator spacers 140-160

I came home from my last visit to our regional Volvo composting facility with, among other bits and pieces, an integral manifold (secondary butterflies already removed), four HIF6s in varying condition (to make up two good ones), a bunch of the individual heat shields, and two bakelite insulating spacers.

Two of the SUs were attached to the manifold without the spacers, and the other two had the insulating spacers attached to them and their respective heat shields, but I don’t recall the sequence of the sandwich.

Today I started to mount the carbs on my ex-B20E and found that, if I use the spacers, the studs for mounting the carbs are too short. So, I have the option of trying to pull the studs and replacing them with longer ones, or mounting the carbs without the spacers, as they were on the engine I got them off.

Question 1: How critical are the bakelite spacers?

Question 2: Are those spacers normally mounted between the manifold and the heat shields, or between the heat shields and the carburetors?

Thanks and have a great Christmas.

Bob S.
