General question about oil

Talking at work today, one topic was high mileage oil vs. reg oil. They felt that high mileage and synthetic oil on older high mile cars is a waist of money. On the same note, what about oil stabilizers like Lucas oil treatment. Just wondering what other volvo drivers opinions are.
