I have a 1992 244 with, I believe, an AW-70. I just bought it and I'm new to this. I was more than willing to make this car my learning experience because I paid only $600 for it, but I'm afraid I'll be learning a little too fast.
After about an hour of in-town driving, the transmission made a horrible metallic grinding noise when I tried to put it into park. Same thing happened when putting it into neutral. I shut off the motor and it ground in park upon starting too. The shifter is a little loose I think, but there aren't many other symptoms that I can tell. It shifts really well. It doesn't visibly leak oil from the back or really anywhere else. The tranny is full of fluid.
After letting it cool down for an hour, the bad noise went away and I drove home with no problems.
The car has 137,000 miles but has not been maintained particularly well. Tranny mounts are probably bad and the car vibrates more than it should.
Anything in particular I should look for? Will I need a new tranny? Should I stop driving it immediately?
