1) "new ground wire on the valve-to-firewall."
• That ground strap is merely there to minimize radio interference from ignition wires, etc. It has no effect on how the engine runs.
2) "the fuse that connects the battery to the starter"
• There isn't any fuse to the starter. The only one in that area should be the 25 Amp blade fuse that supplies power to the FI and Ignition circuits. As Art mentions below, a dead short to ground somewhere could pop that fuse.
