Starting problems 700 1991

First day off and I have not yet got to the distributor but new symptoms. Starts fine. Idles low (500 rpm - what is recommended and best way to adjust?). Also it seems to be building up pressure in the radiator. After it runs a few minutes I am seeing a "pop off" at the reservoir which re-occurs every 2 to 3 minutes. So far temp gauge is normal - and the thermostat was replaced recently...What should I be looking at?
