Rico,
The original refrigerant leaked out somehow. This means that you must replace or repair some part that is leaking, likely the compressor.
By the way, when you do something to prove a point, you make it a game. Games have winners and losers. Relationships are not supposed to have winners and losers, especially marriage, which is definately not a game.
I would replace the evaporator first. Then either install a new compressor (unlikely), or rebuild the old one (more gratifying). SKF makes sleeves for shaft seal facing repair, and this would be a great application. All of the old O-Rings must be replaced as well as the dryer. At this point you should have the system flushed, oiled, and charged at a certified shop. Flushing will remove any particles or sludge that would compromise the system.
Good Luck!
