Plug all the vacuum connections to your manifold.
If that helps it will be the one that screws things up.
A missing or open pcv valve is a good example of such a problem.
BTW you should also include "year" because lots of 544s and all 444s came with B16
or earlier engines. They have different carbs and different problems.
