I had a similar thing happen to my 1992 740 non turbo wagon a few years ago. My idle was moving up and down like a yoyo & sometimes it would just stall out. I decided to take it to the Volvo dealer and let them have a crack at it. They reset the idle control computer and my brick has been running smooth ever since.
