my manual's instructions said to remove the seal housing from the engine completely, so since it is out damaging the crankshaft is not an issue. it fits so snugly that it doesn't seem like a screwdriver would fit, but i will give it another stab tomorrow (i've already showered and had a beer, so i'm down for the count tonight)
