But since the drain plug is inset there's still gonna be plenty of the "big stuff" that doesn't get drawn out of the pan by draining. The only way to get rid of most of the crap that's settled on the bottom is by dropping the pan and cleaning it directly (which is absolutely NOT recommended).

In other words, for a flush that is part of routine maintenance it's fine to do the simple flush as you have been doing without draining via the plug.
