940 Shifting Auto Trans

When you look at the driver's side of the engine, you'll see an aluminum throttle "spool" facing you at the top of the engine. This spool has three cables , like brake cables on a bicycle, coming off it to your right. The outer cable closest to you is for the cruise control. the second one is the throttle cable. T he third is the kickdown cable.

Now follow the kickdown cable to the right a couple of inches and you come to a bracket bolted to the intake manifold. The sheath of the kickdown cable attaches to this bracket with a screw adjustment provided. Where this cable attaches to the screw adjustment there is a metal ferrule and the black outer sheath on the cable is supposed to be crimped inside the ferrule.

On my 940, the black sheath had pulled out of the ferrule but was held to the ferrule so that it looked ok. Even my mechanic thought it was ok. When I pulled on the sheath it wasn't held by the ferrule but pulled back easily. this loose sheath changed the position of the cable on the spool causing the shift points to move to much higher speeds.

I tapered the black plastic covering on the sheath with a knife to make it fit back into the ferrule more easily. By pushing and wriggling the sheath, I managed to get it back into the ferrule. After checking that the shift points were now correct, I squeezed the end of the ferrule onto the sheath with pliers. All has been well now for nearly a year.

Sorry to be slow to reply. I broke both my right shoulder joint and elbow when I forgot to use my parachute coming down from my roof. I'm home from the hospital but not back up to speed yet.
