shifting problems 700

There is a shift linkage directly under the shifter under the car.

It's basically straight across from the fuel pump cage (if you have bosch fuel pumps) or it's about straight across from under the driver's seat.

There are 2 nuts and bolts and 3 plastic bushings in the system. A very very loose or missing nut/bolt will cause this. Missing bushings cost about 80 cents from IPD or FCP depending on if the west or east coast (respectively) is closer to you. I prefer FCP over IPD, but whatever.

MAKE SURE NOBODY STARTS THE CAR WHILE YOU ARE UNDER IT. It's possible to have the shifter in a position where the neutral/park safety switch is fooled and to start the car IN GEAR with the linkage misadjusted.

Take care and good luck!
