ok thanks. I have spent some time cleaning these things up, front and back. But the ground wire is a good idea.
I have narrowed the problem down some, and I will buy a flasher today. The thing I replaced before was actually the relay for the backup lights. After replacing a fuse and removing the (real) flasher, I ran a short wire between the two terminals on the flasher socket. Now I get signal lights when I move the signal lever up and down. So I know everything else works when the flasher is removed. I'll see what a new one will do. Maybe the old one just picked a confusing time to go out.
