Could be a cracked fuel pickup line, but doesn't smell quite right to me.
Try this: with 1/4 tank or less of gas, threshhold brake and see if the car dies. If so, you have a cracked pickup line. By threshhold brake, I mean brake hard enough to make you feel like you something left on the seat might just fly off into the kickpanel, but not so hard that it actually does.
The 3-4 seconds of braking will hopefully deprive the car of enough fuel to reproduce the symptoms, or won't cause any issues. I had an Aerostar that would die if I threshhold braked. I never realized that I always drove around with the tank less than half full until I tried the same maneuver with a full and empty tank of gas.
The other possibility is that there was something caught in the AMM's hot wire assembly, throwing the fuel mix off. If that was it, you may never know, but if you have foam in your airbox, some people say it disintegrates and flows through the intake.
Personally, I like the foam in my airbox, and got a lot more fine particles(silt) coming into my air filter box.
Good Luck!
