I made a puller out of a piece of half-inch plywood and 3 3/8" carriage bolts with the heads ground eccentric so they would fit through the holes and then move to one side and pull. I started out with a 7/16"-14 bolt in the center to push with, and eventually put a T-nut in to give better bite than the wood.
It does not take much of a pull. The shaft is straight, not tapered and it is about a zero-interference fit.
Like the others I would bet that it is the gear itself. They get loose on the knurled steel hub and get VERY noisy. The noise usually disappears under load, until the wear gets so bad that the gear can slip on the hub.
