Giving advice to pull the switch and clean or replace it should come with the caveat, easier said than done -- at least for those of you in the rust belt.
What I've found true in three of these so far, is the rubber seal around the switch fails to keep the rim of the casting's switch opening from rusting. When that rusts, it grows inward against the nylon switch body. You can unscrew it, but then, until you clean the considerable growth of rust from the rim, the soft nylon is impossible to screw back in, whether or not the switch is replaced with a new one.
