It's a very plausible scenario. Most likely make the O2 read lean, the ECU dumps more gas into compensate, which makes it run too rich. If the leak is bad enough, the ECU hits its limit on O2 driven enrichment range, and sets a light.

You should read the codes, though, and make sure they are related.
