Why not just try to straighten the bumpers a bit while they're still on the car?
Although I prefer the look of an early 140 without the bumpers, I can't stand the thought of my car being damaged with just a tap at a stoplight.

As for the Oct. '71 and short shifter, that doesn't surprise me as the car is likely a "model year" 1972. Productions generally start the last few months of the previous model year.
