No easy way to determine the cam type, but just as important is to make sure that what is in there is fully functional - no rounded over lobes. That can be checked with your thumb on a running engine with the valve cover off. A couple of pieces of cardboard on either side of the valvetrain will keep the engine compartment clean. At a slow idle just place your thumb on each adjuster screw in turn. If any don't move as much as the others, you'll feel it instantly. New cam needed at that point.
