Some very knowledgeable people who reprogram/rechip them say they're pretty much the same except the very latest ones may be faster to learn. They are backward compatible, a late one will work in an early car. The early ones are more forgiving of problems, the later ones are more precise.
You do have to account for turbo and for egr. There is a list somewhere.

I have a bunch for sale, Bosch xxx---937 is a popular one from 93, and I have some later ones also. $50 shipped. All have run in my car.
