If the Balancer wasn't moving at all,it's very possible that the Crank Gear broke it's tiny Nib that keys the Crank combined with a loose Crank bolt.
Maybe that was the knock. The Balancer standing still while the Crank Gear banged that nib off the Balancer.
OIL: was it coming out of the Timing Cover or out teh back of teh Engine?
