"the little stopper on the cable was retracted all the way to the beginning of the threading for the adjustment nuts."
Then maybe the adjustment nuts have been diddled so that the cable is too tight. That little "stopper" is not a meant to be a stopper, but to show when the adjustment is too tight. There should be about 1/8" of cable showing between stopper and the end of the sheath. And the cable should have a little slack in it. Try backing off on the adjustment to meet those conditions.
