Changed front brake pads; now pedal is soft

my experience has been that it's when i have to "encourage" the pads to go in that something is not getting out of the way--either the piston isn't pushed in far enough, or the dust boot is getting snagged on the pads.

Since the brakes were nice and firm beforehand, I would focus on the stuff you disturbed: the pads and hardware. As long as you didn't open the lines at the caliper, bleeding is not likely to remedy anything. And a firm pedal before suggests the rubber lines are in adequate condition.
