I'm also with John and the others on this, it's likely the thermo and/or plugged heater core. I have, however, installed a pusher electric fan for those hot days when you're stuck in traffic. I have the sensor, which slides into the rad between the core tubes, set so that the fan kicks in when the temp gauge needle hits the upper mark. It's amazing how seldom the fan operates during normal driving and never on the highway. For those of you who notice that I'm in Canada and figure it never gets above freezing here, our summers in beautiful British Columbia feature temperatures in the mid to high 80's routinely and occasionally well into the 90's. :-)
