Around here, I would go to a local pick&pull and get seats at $20 each, some window switches for a $1, and assorted other junk. Then sell the 740.
If you do not like a car, don't keep it! DIY is a pride of ownership thing, which comes easily to those that like Volvos.
After the 740 is sold, get a price fix on the 240 and start looking for a 'new' car. At least the 240 runs, so you have a way to go grocery shopping.
But buy something that will not drain your pockets or require a lot of maint. You will probably have to splurge on a new battery, you do park for long periods of time. Try to find something with airbags and ABS, which means 1990+. A 4X4 sounds good, but they are expensive to maintain, hard on tires, and even harder on mpg. A FWD car would be more suitable.
