Progress... 444-544

I had the paint done by a guy I know in Kelso, WA. Independent shop that works mostly on classics. Drop me a line if you want his contact info.

I figured now would be the best time to insulate the interior, while everything is out of the way (dash, etc...). Plus, its too cold to really paint stuff this time of year, this was a task I could do to pass the time over the winter.

It took 4 people to roll the car on its side, once the engine and everything else is out (suspension, interior, anything bolted down) the car doesnt weigh that much, maybe 200-300 pounds(?). I got an old mattress for free and started scraping. I tried a number of different methods to remove the undercoating including, but not limited to, sandblasting, wire wheel (second best), needle scaler, chemical dissolution (kerosene and ATF), but the best tool was a simple 2" paint scraper. Just be sure to keep it sharp. The wire wheel on an angle grinder worked ok, but seemed to "dull" quickly, it was good for getting into tight spaces though. I then sanded the bottom with a jitterbug, primed and painted (brush on). I dont think I would ever again remove undercoating that way, next time I would just have the whole car dipped. The undercoating took around 50 hours to remove. It was awful, but I got some pretty big shoulder muscles by the end :)
