I have a 92 745t, great car. I've owned it for the past almost 2 years and 17,000 miles, now with 150,000 miles. My symptoms are these:
1) when I arrive at my destination, usually greater than 10 miles, and I idle down in the parking lot, it smells like it's running rich, I can smell it in the cabin.
2) while driving at speeds of greater than 45mph with only the sunroof open, the cabin fills with a gas smell.
What I have done:
-The ECT checks out ok, both at the sensor and the FI computer
-Checked FPR with no symptoms of failure and then swapped the FPR with my 94 944 n/a and no change in either vehicle
-Pulled spark plug #2 (random selection) and it looks ok, just like the plugs in my 940 after 60,000 miles which runs superbly
-Clean air filter (K&N)
-No OBD codes and no CEL
-Idle is ok, acceleration is ok
-All new vacuum hoses
-New flame trap (didn't seem to need one but I did it anyway)
-New fuel filter
-Checked for gas leaks all over the car and nothing evident
-Per prior owner's records, cat replaced at 123,000 miles and exhaust from cat back replaced at 133,000 miles
-Per prior owner's records, throttle body cleaned at 111,000 miles
One day several months back the car would not idle anywhere and stalled unless I held the rpm to above 1,000 until it had been run and driven for more than 15 minutes. But that was only a one day fluke.
So now I'm stumped. It seems the only items left are the MAF, ECU and old age (the car, not me!).
I'm willing to live with the rich smell at idle and I had all but accepted that it was a product of old age. But the gas smell while driving is something I would rather live with out.
Any suggestions other than what I've listed?
