weber carb and crankcase venting

It has been ages since I posted here, but I thought that someone might be able to answer this...

A customer's car that went to another shop for a while,(the customer lives about a hundred miles away), and came back to me with a Weber DCOE hung off the side PLUS some extra breather plumbing.

The part of the plumbing that I question is a one way valve that connects the crankcase breather to the exhaust system under the car. Apparently the "other folks" installed this as a way of scavenging the crankcase pressures/vapors.

A hose leads from the crankcase vent, up across the intake manifold, down the rear side of the engine and over to a valve welded to the exhaust system aft of the down pipe. I just uploaded two images to the gallery, but I can't make them become an attachment here on the post. I think that they are labeled "several".

I have been in the service business of a long time and never have I seen something like this. Could anyone here offer their perspective, pro or con, on the advisability of this installation?

My instinct is that it is probably NOT a good thing, but before I go shooting my mouth off about it to the customer I would like some feedback from anyone who has had hands-on experience with the system.

Thanks, Jack
