Have you been taking this car to an indie?
I had a '90 744 TI that had been doctored up so it would run with one of the temp sensors out, The fan was seized, so the thermostat was jammed open.
Perhaps something started to work again. Have you tried the FAQ?
I am surprised that you do not mention that you checked the coolant level after the fan ran after shut down.
Sometimes a trip to the dealer is worthwhile.
