B20 overheating 120-130

Hi,

I've been having the issue of overheating with the B20 that's in my '62 122S and I'm hoping someone can help

- the car doesn't overheat with no thermostat
- I have flushed the radiator extensively, replaced water pump
- With 81'c 180'F thermostat, the temp gauge is going right up the the hot line, and will creep into/past hot if idling in traffic.
- I'm pretty sure the gauge is correct because once it's this hot the car runs on for a few seconds when turned off
- Top radiator hose is hot, bottom is ice cold.
- I have installed the thermostat with the spring part facing down.. is this correct?

Just ordered a colder 70'c/ 158'F thermostat to see if it makes a difference. Have also followed procedure on 'burping' the system. I have driven for over 2 hours with the temp gauge indicating right at hot, but it didn't go over unless idling in traffic.. also didn't boil over.

Any ideas?

Thanks!
